INTERNATIONALISATION OF THE CURRICULUM SPECIAL INTEREST GROUP

With the growing number of international students enrolled at South African higher education institutions, as well as the global quest by universities to become internationalized, there is a need to share ideas and understandings about how academics are incorporating international and intercultural dimensions into the curriculum in terms of content, methodologies and assessment. The Internationalisation of the Curriculum (IoC) Special Interest Group (SIG) has been established in order to bring together a community of academics and practitioners as well as all those involved in curriculum development, policy and reform to share and increase their understanding of what IoC means in their disciplines, courses and for their institutions.

  • To develop a shared understanding of the concept of IoC and how this is relevant to various higher education programmes serving increasingly mobile students
  • To create a network of academics, practitioners and curriculum developers, institutional leaders and those interested in exploring what IoC means for what and how they teach
  • To bring together individuals interested in conducting and sharing research into the implications of IoC for teaching and learning

Leadership Meetings
An IoC SIG EXCO will be elected at the launch and will meet twice a year. The first meeting will take place during the 2012 IEASA conference where a programme of action for the year ahead will be discussed and priorities set. At least one of the two meetings will be a face-to-face one held during the IEASA annual conference. Other meetings may be held via teleconference or other virtual or electronic modes.

Online Networking
An Online Forum will be created to enable members to participate in the professional development opportunity provided through the SIG such as sharing of ideas experiences and resources. The SIG will cater for needs of members from across the higher education sector.

Professional Development
Professional development workshops/seminars on aspects of IoC will be organized in various institutions (chapters) throughout the year which will be open to non-members at the host institution who have an interest in IoC. These will also be open to international participants. At least one workshop will be run at the IEASA annual conference where case studies may be shared through workshop topics. Workshops may cover topics such as:

  • What does IoC mean in my discipline or course(s)?
  • Who benefits from IoC?
  • How can you integrate IoC and Intercultural dimensions into your curriculum?

Round Tables may be organized to critique IoC research.
